Rooted in the idea of removing barriers to education, inclusive design supports the full range of humanity and goes hand-in-hand with open education.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">So far, this module has prompted you to create an OER vision and to begin searching for existing open resources that you can adopt and adapt for your course. You may also have identified some \u201cgaps\u201d that require the creation of new open content. This section will discuss the importance of adopting, adapting and creating open content with diversity and inclusion in mind \u2014 and will share practical strategies you can use to make your open content more inclusive for all learners. For more information about what diversity and inclusion mean, you can read BCcampus\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/bccampus.ca\/about-us\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion statement<\/a>.<\/p>\nThe inclusivity benefits of working with OER:\n<ul>\n \t<li>you can <strong>adopt<\/strong> content from multiple sources to create a mash-up that represents multiple voices, perspectives and world views;<\/li>\n \t<li>not all existing open resources have been created with accessibility or inclusivity in mind. Thankfully, the open licences associated with OER allow you to <strong>adapt<\/strong> this content too;<\/li>\n \t<li>you can <strong>create<\/strong> new content with inclusive and accessible design principles right from the beginning(!);<\/li>\n \t<li>... and because OER are perpetually evolving, you can continue to make them more and more inclusive over time \u2014 as students change and our world evolves!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What is Inclusive Design?<\/h2>\nPlease watch the following one-minute introduction to inclusive design. The transcript can be found below the video.\n\n[embed]https:\/\/youtu.be\/G46wFpXgiBg[\/embed]\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/G46wFpXgiBg\" rel=\"noopener\">Watch \"What is Inclusive Design\" on YouTube<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1M23dE0gQP06gKhnTSdilWSIQWyVAptAgBfavZxVvwLo\/edit?usp=sharing\" rel=\"noopener\">Transcript-What is Inclusive Design<\/a><\/p>\n&nbsp;\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/legacy.idrc.ocadu.ca\/about-the-idrc\/49-resources\/online-resources\/articles-and-papers\/443-whatisinclusivedesign\" rel=\"noopener\">Inclusive Design Research Centre (IDRC)<\/a> provides this definition of inclusive design:<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: center\"><span class=\"pullquote shaded\">\u201cDesign that considers the full range of human diversity with respect to ability, language, culture, gender, age and other forms of human difference.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left\">In its <a href=\"https:\/\/legacy.idrc.ocadu.ca\/about-the-idrc\/49-resources\/online-resources\/articles-and-papers\/443-whatisinclusivedesign\" rel=\"noopener\">guiding framework<\/a>, the IDRC outlines the following three dimensions of inclusive design:<\/p>\n\n<ul>\n \t<li id=\"88bd\" class=\"hf hg dm hi b hj hk hl hm hn ho hp hq hr hs ht hu hv hw hx hy hz ia ib ic id de ej\">Recognize, respect and design with human uniqueness and variability.<\/li>\n \t<li id=\"b5e5\" class=\"hf hg dm hi b hj hk hl hm hn ho hp hq hr hs ht hu hv hw hx hy hz ia ib ic id de ej\">Use inclusive, open and transparent processes and co-design with people who have a diversity of perspectives \u2014 including people who can\u2019t use, or have difficulty using, the current designs.<\/li>\n \t<li id=\"2c31\" class=\"hf hg dm hi b hj hk hl hm hn ho hp hq hr hs ht hu hv hw hx hy hz ia ib ic id de ej\">Realize that you are designing in a complex adaptive system. Be aware of the context and broader impact of any design \u2014 and strive to effect a beneficial impact beyond the intended beneficiary of the design.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"card card-standard\">\n<div class=\"card-body\">\n<h2>Dimensions of Diversity<\/h2>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left\">The first dimension of inclusive design includes recognizing and respecting the human uniqueness and variability of the user. Think back to your OER vision. Who are your learners? For whom are you creating your OER? The virtuous tornado, shown in the image below, describes an upward spiral into which needs, characteristics and perspectives are injected at each design iteration. As the design moves up the spiral it expands to encompass these needs \u2014 becoming more and more inclusive in the process.<\/p>\n\n<div class=\"textbox\">\n\n[caption id=\"attachment_62\" align=\"aligncenter\" width=\"494\"]<img class=\"wp-image-62\" src=\"https:\/\/fanshaweopen.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2022\/10\/VirtuousTornado04.png\" alt=\"A diagram showing a spiral in the centre which is getting wider and wider toward the top as it spirals outward. Each time you circle around and move up the spiral you will be stretching the design to encompass more and more voices, perspectives and needs. This design process is exponentially enriched when you co-design and develop with people who have diverse perspectives and experiences \u2014 including people who can\u2019t use, or have difficulty using, the current designs.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left\">The overall goal is to create a design that does not compromise the experience of one person to make room for the requirements of another. <strong>If you are able to change your design to meet the needs of at least one additional person, you are moving in the right direction. <\/strong>And since OER can be continually updated and modified, this iterative process can be ongoing \u2014 as you work to make your content as inclusive as possible.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n&nbsp;\n<h2 class=\"entry-title\">Diverse and Inclusive Representation in OER \u2014 Practical Approaches<\/h2>\nThe beautiful thing about OER is that we can continually work to make our content more inclusive. Here are some guidelines to keep in mind to ensure that the content of your OER is both diverse and inclusive.<span style=\"font-size: 1em\">\u00a0<\/span>\n\n&nbsp;\n\n<details><summary><strong>Citational Practices<\/strong><\/summary>\n<div class=\"collapsed\">Consider what authors, researchers and organizations you are citing. Where possible, aim to diversify your references. Seek-out specific efforts and programs that drive inclusive citation \u2014 such as \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.citeblackwomencollective.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cite Black Women [new tab]<\/a>. This may be easier in some disciplines than others, but try to identify specific opportunities in your discipline \u2014 and partner with your editors and teams to potentially engage with academic organizations focused on diversity, equity and inclusion in your field.<\/div>\n<\/details>&nbsp;\n\n<details><summary><strong>Examples and Exercises<\/strong><\/summary>\n<div class=\"collapsed\">\n\nEnsure that diverse contexts are included, all examples are comprehensible by everyone and stereotypes are avoided.\n<ol>\n \t<li>Use examples that include a variety of people, organizations, geographies and situations.<\/li>\n \t<li>Use real-world scenarios that address diverse situations and contexts.<\/li>\n \t<li>Avoid stereotypes or sensitive subjects in problems and applications \u2014 unless the subject matter demands it.<\/li>\n \t<li>Do not make assumptions about prior knowledge \u2014 especially around culturally specific examples. For example, not all students may be familiar with Western nursery rhymes or kids\u2019 television from the 1990s.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<\/details>&nbsp;\n\n<details><summary><strong>Illustrations and Photos<\/strong><\/summary>\n<div class=\"collapsed\">\n\nEnsure images throughout the resource reflect diversity and consider the intersectionality and context of the depiction (for example, is anything perpetuating a stereotype or does the context\/setting indicate anything negative?).\n<ol>\n \t<li>Consider the quantity of images and illustrations \u2014 and the individuals and populations represented therein.<\/li>\n \t<li>Consider the role, depiction, connotation and purpose of the people represented \u2014 and the context in which you are using the image.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\nResource: A list of <a href=\"https:\/\/bccampus.ca\/2020\/09\/21\/stock-photos-focused-around-diversity-equity-and-inclusion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">openly licensed image collections that include people of various genders, skin tones, abilities, etc [new tab]<\/a>.\n\n<\/div>\n<\/details>&nbsp;\n\n<details><summary><strong>Key Figures in a Field<\/strong><\/summary>\n<div class=\"collapsed\">\n\nWhen discussing historical, pioneering or current researchers or studies in the field, recognize contributions from people of all backgrounds.\n<ol>\n \t<li>Seek diversity in key figures.<\/li>\n \t<li>Avoid isolating marginalized figures to specific sections (for example, multiculturalism).<\/li>\n \t<li>Where historical figures are not diverse, include current figures from the underrepresented groups.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<\/details>&nbsp;\n\n<details><summary><strong>Names<\/strong><\/summary>\n<div class=\"collapsed\">\n\nEnsure that people\u2019s names used in examples, exercises and scenarios represent various countries of origin, ethnicities and genders. Ensure that names with particular ethnic or origin associations are portrayed respectfully and accurately \u2014 avoid negative comparisons or stereotypes associated with particular national origins or ethnicities.\n<ol>\n \t<li>Include diverse names representing various national origins, ethnicities, genders, etc.<\/li>\n \t<li>Avoid stereotypes associated with certain names or names that present in a certain way.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\nResource: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.babynamewizard.com\/international-names-lists-popular-names-from-around-the-world\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Popular Names from Around the World [new tab]<\/a>\n\n<\/div>\n<\/details>&nbsp;\n\n<details><summary><strong>Pronouns<\/strong><\/summary>\n<div class=\"collapsed\">\n\nGender is a spectrum and gender diversity is something that should be reflected in OER. This means using gender-neutral language, using examples that reflect gender diversity and using people\u2019s correct pronouns.\n<ol>\n \t<li>Use a variety of pronouns \u2014 including gender-neutral pronouns \u2014 for the people included in examples, exercises and scenarios.<\/li>\n \t<li>When referring to a real person, ensure that you are using their correct pronouns. If unsure, this information can often be found by checking their website or Twitter bio \u2014 or just by asking.<\/li>\n \t<li>When referring to a non-identified individual, use the singular \u201cthey\u201d rather than \u201che\/she.\u201d (For example: A student should ask their teacher about the preferred citation style.)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<\/details>&nbsp;\n\n<details><summary><strong>Terminology and Language<\/strong><\/summary>\n<div class=\"collapsed\">\n\nEnsure that all references to people, groups, populations, categories, conditions and disabilities use the appropriate terminology and do not contain any derogatory, colloquial, inappropriate or otherwise incorrect language. For historical uses that should remain in place, consider adding context, such as \u201ca widely used term at the time.\u201d Ensure that quotations or paraphrases using outdated terms are attributed, contextualized and rare.\n<ol>\n \t<li>Replace any outdated, incorrect, or offensive terminology. If needed for historical references or direct quotations, insert context, attribution and\/or quotations.<\/li>\n \t<li>Recognize that appropriate terminology is changing all the time \u2014 and do your best to use current terms.<\/li>\n \t<li>Avoid idioms or colloquialisms that may lead to confusion or misunderstanding.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<strong>Resource:\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ecampusontario.pressbooks.pub\/app\/uploads\/sites\/1421\/2022\/01\/slc-inclusive-and-antiracist-writing-resources-complete_guide.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Inclusive &amp; Antiracist Writing Resources [PDF]<\/a>. The virtuous tornado, shown in the image below, describes an upward spiral into which needs, characteristics and perspectives are injected at each design iteration. Each time you circle around and move up the spiral you will be stretching the design to encompass more and more voices, perspectives and needs. This design process is exponentially enriched when you co-design and develop with people who have diverse perspectives and experiences \u2014 including people who can\u2019t use, or have difficulty using, the current designs.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left\">The overall goal is to create a design that does not compromise the experience of one person to make room for the requirements of another. <strong>If you are able to change your design to meet the needs of at least one additional person, you are moving in the right direction. <\/strong>And since OER can be continually updated and modified, this iterative process can be ongoing \u2014 as you work to make your content as inclusive as possible.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"entry-title\">Diverse and Inclusive Representation in OER \u2014 Practical Approaches<\/h2>\n<p>The beautiful thing about OER is that we can continually work to make our content more inclusive. Here are some guidelines to keep in mind to ensure that the content of your OER is both diverse and inclusive.<span style=\"font-size: 1em\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<details>\n<summary><strong>Citational Practices<\/strong><\/summary>\n<div class=\"collapsed\">Consider what authors, researchers and organizations you are citing. Where possible, aim to diversify your references. Seek-out specific efforts and programs that drive inclusive citation \u2014 such as \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.citeblackwomencollective.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cite Black Women [new tab]<\/a>. This may be easier in some disciplines than others, but try to identify specific opportunities in your discipline \u2014 and partner with your editors and teams to potentially engage with academic organizations focused on diversity, equity and inclusion in your field.<\/div>\n<\/details>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<details>\n<summary><strong>Examples and Exercises<\/strong><\/summary>\n<div class=\"collapsed\">\n<p>Ensure that diverse contexts are included, all examples are comprehensible by everyone and stereotypes are avoided.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Use examples that include a variety of people, organizations, geographies and situations.<\/li>\n<li>Use real-world scenarios that address diverse situations and contexts.<\/li>\n<li>Avoid stereotypes or sensitive subjects in problems and applications \u2014 unless the subject matter demands it.<\/li>\n<li>Do not make assumptions about prior knowledge \u2014 especially around culturally specific examples. For example, not all students may be familiar with Western nursery rhymes or kids\u2019 television from the 1990s.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<\/details>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<details>\n<summary><strong>Illustrations and Photos<\/strong><\/summary>\n<div class=\"collapsed\">\n<p>Ensure images throughout the resource reflect diversity and consider the intersectionality and context of the depiction (for example, is anything perpetuating a stereotype or does the context\/setting indicate anything negative?).<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Consider the quantity of images and illustrations \u2014 and the individuals and populations represented therein.<\/li>\n<li>Consider the role, depiction, connotation and purpose of the people represented \u2014 and the context in which you are using the image.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Resource: A list of <a href=\"https:\/\/bccampus.ca\/2020\/09\/21\/stock-photos-focused-around-diversity-equity-and-inclusion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">openly licensed image collections that include people of various genders, skin tones, abilities, etc [new tab]<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/details>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<details>\n<summary><strong>Key Figures in a Field<\/strong><\/summary>\n<div class=\"collapsed\">\n<p>When discussing historical, pioneering or current researchers or studies in the field, recognize contributions from people of all backgrounds.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Seek diversity in key figures.<\/li>\n<li>Avoid isolating marginalized figures to specific sections (for example, multiculturalism).<\/li>\n<li>Where historical figures are not diverse, include current figures from the underrepresented groups.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<\/details>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<details>\n<summary><strong>Names<\/strong><\/summary>\n<div class=\"collapsed\">\n<p>Ensure that people\u2019s names used in examples, exercises and scenarios represent various countries of origin, ethnicities and genders. Ensure that names with particular ethnic or origin associations are portrayed respectfully and accurately \u2014 avoid negative comparisons or stereotypes associated with particular national origins or ethnicities.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Include diverse names representing various national origins, ethnicities, genders, etc.<\/li>\n<li>Avoid stereotypes associated with certain names or names that present in a certain way.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Resource: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.babynamewizard.com\/international-names-lists-popular-names-from-around-the-world\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Popular Names from Around the World [new tab]<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/details>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<details>\n<summary><strong>Pronouns<\/strong><\/summary>\n<div class=\"collapsed\">\n<p>Gender is a spectrum and gender diversity is something that should be reflected in OER. This means using gender-neutral language, using examples that reflect gender diversity and using people\u2019s correct pronouns.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Use a variety of pronouns \u2014 including gender-neutral pronouns \u2014 for the people included in examples, exercises and scenarios.<\/li>\n<li>When referring to a real person, ensure that you are using their correct pronouns. If unsure, this information can often be found by checking their website or Twitter bio \u2014 or just by asking.<\/li>\n<li>When referring to a non-identified individual, use the singular \u201cthey\u201d rather than \u201che\/she.\u201d (For example: A student should ask their teacher about the preferred citation style.)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<\/details>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<details>\n<summary><strong>Terminology and Language<\/strong><\/summary>\n<div class=\"collapsed\">\n<p>Ensure that all references to people, groups, populations, categories, conditions and disabilities use the appropriate terminology and do not contain any derogatory, colloquial, inappropriate or otherwise incorrect language. For historical uses that should remain in place, consider adding context, such as \u201ca widely used term at the time.\u201d Ensure that quotations or paraphrases using outdated terms are attributed, contextualized and rare.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Replace any outdated, incorrect, or offensive terminology.
